Eagles Wake-Up Call: LeSean On QBs, Chip Kelly

LeSean McCoy‘s celebrity softball game, which raises money to help fight ALS, is this Saturday in Lancaster. (Details here.) The Eagles’ running back called into 97.5 The Fanatic this week to promote the event and of course talk a little ball.

McCoy was asked about the quarterback situation and whether he, like Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson, wants more clarity when it comes to the depth chart.

“The thing about Michael Vick is, he’s a 12-year vet, he’s put his work in in the league, and his voice means a lot,” said McCoy. “So I think he spoke out from just his personal feelings. But as far as myself, I think it works out.

“I guess from his point of view, maybe you’re right, maybe he wants to know, ‘Am I starting or am I not?’ That’s not my call. That’s Coach Kelly’s call. He’s the captain of this team and whatever he says, goes…Whoever he decides to go with, whether it’s Nick Foles or Mike, that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Some other highlights:

* On Kelly and his offense: “I think the offense will work. I think it’s something different that this league hasn’t seen yet. I also feel like he does a good job of communicating with the players to kind of get them on the same page. I think he’s a great leader, and we’re following him, so I expect a lot of good things this year from the Eagles.”

* On getting the recommended 10-12 hours of sleep: “I think for certain players it’s a little harder. I have a young boy — he’s 14 months old — so getting sleep when I want is a little different from guys in college who can sleep whenever they get out of class. But we try to do it to the best of our ability.”

* On the offense: “The thing is, it’s going to be hard to really stop because we’re going so fast, where a lot of defenses have to get their alignment set up and get the guys in the right formations and all that. It’s going to be tough to stop, believe that.”

* On the system: Once you grasp the offense it’s a little easier, for sure. We have some plays that are just one word, and certain letters in the word kind of tells you what you have. I don’t think it’s that hard. I picked it up pretty fast.”

 Geoff Mosher offers some thoughts on the defense:

Of the outside linebackers, only Connor Barwin can be definitely called a starter. Trent Cole and Brandon Graham learned the position during the camps and we’ll see where they end up. Expect the coaches to figure out some way of getting these pass rushers on the field. It doesn’t appear as if DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks will be challenged at inside linebacker. Jason Phillips, a free-agent pickup, and Jamar Chaney were consistently running with the second team during the camp. The team is high on rookie free-agent Jake Knott, who could elbow his way onto the roster with impressive showings on special teams.

ESPN has released its NFL power rankings…for 2016. Using different factors such as recent drafts, the front office, coaching stability and the quarterback situation, they take a stab at projecting the long-term prospects for each franchise. The Eagles ranked 17th. Writes Bill Polian:

Coach Kelly can coach offense, but he is also a terrific builder of programs. In constructing the Eagles for the future, the questions remain at quarterback. Who will it be? On defense, the Eagles switch from an attacking 4-3 to a 3-4. Connor Barwin, Kenny Phillips and Cary Williams are solid additions to that group. Whether or not they can sustain excellence playing with a fast-paced offense is the big question. The questions in Philly are intriguing and the answers will be eagerly awaited.
