Open Thread: Eagles vs. Jets
The Eagles take on Todd Bowles and the Jets this afternoon in a high-stakes Week 3 showdown. We’ll pop in with some updates and thoughts from time to time. Feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
4:18 – Final: Eagles 24, Jets 17. Quentin Coples gets called for a hands-to-the-face penalty, and the Eagles run out the clock.
4:09 – Nick Folk boots a 53-yard field goal for the Jets to bring them within 24-17 with 2:34 to play.
4:04 – A Jason Peters update.
Jason Peters is injured on the play. Matt Tobin at left tackle, Dennis Kelly at right guard.

4:02 – A little context for Walter Thurmond’s first three games at safety.
Walter Thurmond’s two INTs are a single-season career-high, after just three games.
— Adam Hermann (@AdamWHermann) September 27, 2015
4:00 – Yet another Jets turnover as Brandon Marshall drops a first-down pass and Walter Thurmond toes the sideline to come down with Ryan Fitzpatrick’s third interception of the afternoon. The Eagles’ lead is 24-14 with three and a half minutes to play.
3:56 – Les Bowen with some good perspective on the Eagles’ lackluster second half.
So with four three and outs in their last 5 possessions, and a turnover in the other, Eagles really helping their defense out here.
— Les Bowen (@LesBowen) September 27, 2015
3:55 – The Eagles can’t capitalize on the Jets’ fumble, and Donnie Jones punts it away with just under five minutes to play.
3:51 – Brandon Bair tips a Ryan Fitzpatrick throw and rookie linebacker Jordan Hicks comes away with the interception. Hicks, who is making his first career start, recovered a fumble earlier in the game. The Eagles get the ball in their own territory with six and a half minutes to play.
3:47 – After burning about two minutes of clock with Ryan Mathews running plays, Ryan Mathews fumbles the ball around midfield and the Jets recover the ball at the Eagles’ 41-yard line. The Eagles lead, 24-14, with 7:23 to play.
3:39 – A marathon drive from the Jets ends with a six-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jeremy Kerley. The 16-play, 81-yard drive ate up more than eight minutes of game clock. The Eagles’ lead is down to 24-14 with 9:37 to play in the game.
3:30 – After three quarters, the Eagles continue to lead the Jets, 24-7. Here’s T-Mac with Sam Bradford’s stats through three.
Bradford 14-of-27 for 118 yards (4.4 avg.) through three quarters. He and Eagles, though, turnover-free so far against Bowles' D.

3:17 – Injury update for Chris Maragos.
Chris Maragos has been downgraded to out with a left knee contusion. E.J. Biggers has been 5th DB in #Eagles nickel defense.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) September 27, 2015
3:16 – Another wheel route presents itself for the Eagles, but this time Bradford’s in-stride pass is dropped by Darren Sproles, who could have converted a first down and then some.
3:11 – Eric Rowe comes up with an impressive end-zone interception of a Ryan Fitzpatrick bomb, and the Eagles take over at their own 20-yard line midway through the third quarter. Rowe gained inside leverage on fellow rookie Devin Smith early in the route.
3:04 – Two fruitless drives to kick off the second half for the Birds. Seven plays and 32 yards for the Eagles, and they punt the ball away again.
3:01 – Eric Rowe breaks up a third-down pass attempt and the Eagles’ defense forces yet another punt from the Jets. Sam Bradford and the Eagles will take over from their own 10-yard line.
2:54 – The Birds sabotage their first drive of the second half with an illegal formation penalty, and punt it away early in the third quarter.
2:52 – An Andrew Gardner update to start the second half.
Gardner is now out for rest of game.
— Tim McManus (@Tim_McManus) September 27, 2015
Matt Tobin is in at right guard.
2:35 – Halftime: Ryan Fitzpatrick’s two-minute drill ends with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall with six seconds left in the first half. The extra point is good, and the Eagles lead the Jets, 24-7 at halftime.
2:26 – Andrew Gardner was hurt on the Eagles’ last touchdown.
Gardner is on examination table. They're checking his right foot. The Eagles have 8 OL active today because of injuries elsewhere.
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) September 27, 2015
2:22 – Darren Sproles punches the ball in from the one-yard line for his second touchdown of the afternoon. The Eagles lead, 24-0, with just over two minutes to go in the first half.
Sproles has 118 total yards so far today.
The Eagles have 13 first downs, while the Jets still have just one.
2:17 – Brandon Marshall inexplicably tries to throw a backwards lateral after picking up a first down, which leads to a fumble and a recovery by Jordan Hicks. The Eagles take over at New York’s 36-yard line.
2:13 – Good stat from former Birds 24/7 intern extraordinaire Tucker Bagley.
Chip Kelly is 15-1 with the Eagles when they score 17 in the first half.
— Tucker Bagley (@tbagley515) September 27, 2015
2:10 – Sam Bradford hits Ryan Mathews on a wheel-route for a 23-yard touchdown, and the Eagles lead the Jets, 17-0. Bradford missed Mathews on the same play one drive earlier. This time, he leads the running back, who beat his coverage for the score.
Bradford is now 8-of-17 for 89 yards and a touchdown, and the Eagles have 159 yards on 32 plays in the first half.
2:07 – The Birds’ defense has looked pretty strong so far.
Eagles' defense has been exceptional so far. Jets have 48 total yards on five possessions.

2:05 – Six punts for the Jets with more than eight minutes left in the first half. The Eagles take the ball back at their own 25-yard line.
1:56 – A great replay of the Sproles punt return touchdown, via 97.5 The Fanatic.
1:53 – Yet another three-and-out from the Jets. Through five drives, New York has 45 yards and one first down, averaging 2.5 yards per play.
1:50 – Great find by CSN Philadelphia’s Reuben Frank.
That is second-longest punt return TD in Eagles history. Damaris Johnson had a 98-yarder vs. Cowboys in 2012.
— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) September 27, 2015
It was the longest punt return of Sproles’ career.
1:48 – The Eagles force the Jets to punt, and Darren Sproles takes the ball 89 yards for a touchdown with the finest punt return of his time in Philadelphia. Cody Parkey’s extra point is good, and the Eagles lead the Jets, 10-0, midway through the second quarter.
1:44 – A short Eagles drive stalls around their own 30-yard line when Sam Bradford fails to convert to Miles Austin on third down. Austin gained position on Cromartie but couldn’t haul in Bradford’s pass, which was behind him and low. Bradford is now 5-for-11 for 40 yards.
1:42 – The excellent Bob Vetrone brings an impressive stat – for both sides – after the first quarter.
First quarter all season the Jets did not have a takeaway …
— Bob Vetrone Jr. (@BoopStats) September 27, 2015
1:39 – At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles lead the Jets, 3-0. The Birds have 76 yards to the Jets’ 35, and six first downs to New York’s one.
1:37 – An impressive tackle for a loss by Malcolm Jenkins and a good tackle in open space from Jordan Hicks lead to another punt from the Jets.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has completed eight of nine pass attempts so far this afternoon, but picked up just 30 yards on those eight completions.
1:30 – The Eagles take seven plays to move from the two-yard line to the nine-yard line before punting the ball away. Sam Bradford is 3-for-8 for 28 yards after two drives, while the run game generated seven yards on four rushes on the second drive.
The Eagles still lead the Jets, 3-0, late in the first quarter.
1:22 – Two drives, two three-and-outs for the Jets. Byron Maxwell stopped Brandon Marshall in single coverage on a third-down out route. An impressive punt from the Jets’ Ryan Quigley pins the Eagles on their own two-yard line. The Jets have 22 yards on six plays so far.
1:17 – Ryan Mathews and the Eagles’ run game looked better than it has all season on the first drive of the game.
Eagles averaged 8 yards per carry on that drive.
— Tim McManus (@Tim_McManus) September 27, 2015
1:16 – The Birds’ first drive falters in the end zone and ends with a 30-yard field goal from Cody Parkey. Ryan Mathews runs the ball twice for 33 yards just one week after the Eagles finished with seven rushing yards against the Cowboys.
Sam Bradford completed two of five passes for 14 yards, with a couple of unproductive check-downs throws to Darren Sproles.
1:06 – The Jets go three-and-out on their first drive of the game. Sam Bradford and the Eagles begin their first drive at their own 29-yard line.
1:03 – The Jets win the toss and choose to receive. They begin the game on their own 18-yard line.
