This New Pop-Up Grocery Store Is Bringing Ready-Made Meals to the Main Line

Pinwheel Provisions, which offers both nutritious frozen food and chef-prepared meals, is launching in Narberth.

“What do you want for dinner?” — the question that launched 1,000 ships (and could potentially sink 1,000 date nights). No, but really: We waste approximately 132 hours per year (that’s 5.5 DAYS!) trying to decide what to eat, which is a lit-tle embarrassing.

To help with our decision-making skills, a new Philly-based grocery store wants to get your next meal on your table as quickly and efficiently as possible, so you can actually focus on eating and enjoying. From February 29th through the end of May in Narberth, Pinwheel Provisions will offer their chef-prepared meals, pre-made sauces and spice blends, and ready-to-use frozen proteins and produce — all of which are nutritious and, ideally, stress-free.

Pinwheel Provisions founder Anjali Gupta, an Ardmore resident and daughter of Jyoti Natural Foods’ owners, wanted to bring European home-meal trends that don’t rely on takeout and are minimal-waste to area residents. She launched the first pop-up in Kennett Square in April 2019. The Narberth location will be the second, with hopes of additional future Philly-area shops.

“Our target audiences are households with working parents and kids with varying palates or dietary restrictions, empty-nesters who love the ability to purchase healthy food in sufficient quantities, and millennials who want to eat well, but sufficiently, and are conscientious their about nutrition habits,” Gupta says.

Pinwheel features three categories of meals. Their “Ready Dishes” — ranging from Moroccan chicken to ale-infused shepherd’s pie — are chef-prepared frozen entrees, sides, and desserts that contain zero preservatives and additives, and can be heated and served in less than 30 minutes. “Fresh Frozens” are bulk frozen fruits, vegetables, and prepared proteins that you scoop yourself from their in-store freezer bins in any quantity or combination you’d like. (FYI- freezing produce locks in the at-harvest nutrients for up to one year.) Their “Meal Makers”  items include shelf-stable artisan cooking sauces, marinades, pastas, grains, beans, and rices that you can pair with your frozen items. In every category, there are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free selections.

As a bonus to the ease the meals provide, the company is environmentally-conscious to boot. They provide recyclable insulated tote bags and reusable freezer bags for you to store your products, but also encourage you to bring their own bags and containers in order to minimize wasteful packaging and eliminating the prospect of food spoilage (which is the single biggest occupant in U.S. landfills).

Pinwheel Provisions will be located at 121 North Narberth Avenue, Narberth. They’ll be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays initially, with additional weekday slots to be added post-launch.
