You Can Learn How to Check for Breast Cancer at This Pop-Up Yoga Event
It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that makes it a pretty good time to learn how to perform a breast cancer check.
While checking for breast cancer is probably something most of us file under “Things I Should Probably Be Doing,” I’d be willing to bet that many of us (yours truly included) don’t do a great job of following through. But while we could blame it on lack of time or forgetfulness, I think another culprit behind our lack of breast cancer awareness might be pretty simple: we don’t know how to check for breast cancer.
While it may feel like a breast cancer check is something you’re just sorta kinda supposed to know how to do, the fact is that there’s an actual method — and everyone should have a chance to learn it. Thankfully, this month — which, yup, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Lumos Yoga & Barre is giving us all a chance to learn from the pros.
On October 25, Lumos is hosting Check Yo Self, a donation-based yoga class, followed by a discussion and demonstration on how to check for lumps with gynecologist Dr. Dana Shanis of Rittenhouse Women’s Wellness Center. The hour-long yoga class will feature an all-levels slow-flow session, allowing everyone to wind down from the work day before transitioning to breast health awareness.
The event was inspired by Lumos co-founder Larkin Silverman’s close friend, who discovered a lump during her own self-examination a year ago — an early discovery that played a critical role in saving her life. After this experience, she made it her mission to inspire more women to care for their breast health.
The cost of the class is a suggested $15, but the best part is that the proceeds are being donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a Pennsylvania-based organization that provides programs and services to those who have been impacted by breast cancer.
The Check Yo Self event is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 25 at Lumos Barre & Yoga (2001 Green Street, Fairmount). You can sign up for the workshop here.
