Free Coffee AND Free Tune-Ups: 3 Things Every Philly Cyclist Should Do This Week
’Tis National Bike to Work Week, friends! And there is a whole lot of (free!) stuff on the agenda this week, some of it somber — the Ride of Silence is tomorrow — and some of it oh-so-sweet. I’m lookin’ at you, free bike tune-ups at Hotel Monaco. Then there’s Bike to Work Day, which is always a blast and a half. I mean, you get free breakfast en route to work — like a dream come true. Below, all the details for the cycling-centric events you should have on your calendar this week.
What: Ride of Silence
When: Wednesday, May 18th at 6:45 p.m.
Where: Meet at the Art Museum, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
2015 was not a great year for Philly cyclists: There were nine traffic-related bicycle deaths. And the past few weeks have been rough, too, with a number of serious cycling accidents going down on Philly streets. The annual Ride of Silence honors all the cyclists who’ve died while riding their bikes, and anyone is welcome to join in on the ride, which is led by a police-escort. You can find more info and register here.
What: Free Cycle Check-Ups
When: Thursday, May 19th from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Hotel Monaco, 433 Chestnut Street.
A free tune-up for your bike and free snacks for you? Yes, please! At Hotel Monaco’s annual Cycle Check-Ups event, mechanics from Keswick Cycle will be on deck to check your bike out and give it an express tune-up free of charge. While you wait, the folks from Red Owl Tavern will help you refuel for the ride to your next stop with samples. Sweet, right? Anyone is welcome to join in; just stop through during one of the time slots listed above.
What: Bike to Work Day
When: Friday, May 20th from 8 to 10 a.m.
Where: Everywhere! (But pedaling through certain areas will get you free coffee and snacks.)
Philadelphia’s 21st Bike to Work Day is coming up this Friday, and it totally beats your normal bike-commuting day. On this very special Friday, pedaling into work will get you a free cup of coffee along with breakfast snacks from KIND. The Bicycle Coalition will have “energizer stations” set up around the city from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and that’s where folks who get to work on two wheels will find the freebies mentioned above. If you want to upgrade your morning commute even more, you can join in on the Bike to Work Celebration Ride, a group ride that will leave from 3260 South Street and land at Dilworth Plaza for a press conference and post-ride celebration. The energizer station locations are listed below:
• 33rd and South Street, University City
• 13th and Pine Street, Midtown Village
• 11th and Washington Avenue, Bella Vista
• 6th and Spring Garden, Callowhill
• 22nd Street, between Spruce and Pine, Rittenhouse.
