Sweat Before You Stuff Your Face: Outdoor Yoga Coming to Night Market
For the past five years, Night Market, the Food Trust’s festival that pops up in different neighborhoods throughout the warmer months, has been all about stuffing your face. I mean, there’s usually so much to choose from, how could you not? But this year, they’ve worked in some food for the soul (their words, not mine): To kick off Night Market season, which will start in Roxborough this time around, there will be a Night Market yoga class. So you can at least get your sweat on before you eat your weight in pizza and ice cream and samosas and whatever else you can get your hands on. AMEN to that.
The class, led by mobile yoga studio On the Goga, will kick off at Gorgas Park in Roxborough at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th, the same day as the Roxborough Night Market. The downward-dog session will run you $6 and includes mat rental, so you don’t have to schlep yours around as you stuff food into your face afterward.
While the Roxborough class is the only Night Market yoga class planned for the moment, On the Goga owner Anna Greenwald tells me she and the Food Trust are aiming “to make this a regular part of future Night Markets with the right outdoor space. We’re expecting this to be a pretty big hit with the Philly-foodie-yoga lovers.”
“That said,” Greenwald says, “we are definitely using this first event to gauge interest, so we’re doing our best to get the word out there! The more people we can get on their mats the 12th, the easier it’ll be to make this offering a regular part of Night Market.” Obviously, along with interest, space is an issue. You can snag your ticket for the class yoga at the Roxborough Night Market here. And here’s to hoping they can squeeze us yogis in in the future — we’re a flexible bunch, after all. Okay, I’ll see myself out now.
