Ice cream is simply a must this time of year. You just can’t get quite the same cold, creamy satisfaction from anything else. And why should vegan eaters have to miss out on that? Thankfully, in Philly, you definitely don’t have to. We’ve rounded up 15 eateries in the Philly area where you can grab a scoop of dairy-free vegan ice cream. And given that this week’s forecast is looking hot, hot, hot, we’re guessing you’re going to want to try out some of these treats pronto.
All The Way Live Café
6108 Germantown Avenue, Germantown
Along with a full menu of vegan and raw sandwiches, salads, and burgers, All The Way Live offers an impressive array of vegan desserts, like coconut cream pie, apple cake, and cheesecake. You can get any of them à la mode, topped with the café’s soy-free vegan coconut ice cream.
B2
1500 East Passyunk Avenue, Passyunk Square
Vegan soft serve, here you come. This cafe serves up a vanilla version that will knock your socks off.
Govinda’s Gourmet Vegetarian
1408 South Street, Center City
Finish off your vegetarian meal from Govinda’s with a scoop or two of vegan ice cream picked from their very long list of vegan flavors.
The Franklin Fountain
116 Market Street, Old City
You can find a rotating cast of coconut-based ice cream flavors at the Fountain throughout the year. Right now, try vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or blueberry.
HipCityVeg
127 South 18th Street, Rittenhouse, and 214 South 40th Street, University City
You might already be an Udon Noodle Salad or Curry Tofu Wrap veteran (yummmm), but have you had one of this totally-vegan joint’s milkshakes? Try chocolate, vanilla, or orangesicle the next time you stop by. You won’t be sorry.
Linda’s Vegetarian Village
6381 Germantown Ave, Germantown
This is another eatery where you can find lots of vegan (and raw!) options, one of them being ice cream made with a cashew base.
Little Baby’s Ice Cream
2311 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown, and 4903 Catharine Street, West Philly
Balsamic Banana and Earl Grey Sriracha are just two of the vegan flavors you’ll find at Little Baby’s, to give you an idea of their offerings. At their storefronts, you can enjoy their ice cream on its own or sandwiched between two vegan cookies which also come in unconventional flavors like Almond Fennel and Chai Snickerdoodle. You can also find Little Baby’s sold in pints at a bunch of local restaurants and grocers around town.
Miss Rachel’s Pantry
1938 South Chadwick Street, South Philly
This site is home to a catering company, a weekly home-meals program, a weekend vegan market, and a dining room where on Saturday evenings Miss Rachel hosts a communal six-course, vegan, prix-fix, BYOB dinner, during which ice cream is often served. Most recently they featured a coconut-based ice cream served over strawberry buttermilk cake. Yum!
Soy Café
630 North 2nd Street, Northern Liberties
This cafe’s menu is chock-full of vegetarian and vegan eats, but their dessert menu is actually entirely vegan. Grab a plain scoop of chocolate or vanilla any old time, or, if you’re in the mood, go all out and order the brownie sundae.
Su Tao Café
81 Lancaster Avenue, Malvern
This restaurant in the ‘burbs offers a full menu of vegan dishes, best followed with a scoop of their chocolate, vanilla, almond bark, mint chocolate chip, or royal coffee vegan ice cream.
Sweet Freedom
Multiple locations
This bakery caters to all common dietary restrictions and allergies, a dairy-free, vegan diet included. The treats vary daily, but you can often find vegan ice cream in there somewhere, usually in one of their creamy popsicles or cookie sandwiches.
Vedge
1221 Locust Street, Midtown Village.
A meal at this veggie-centric restaurant would not be complete without one of its mouthwatering “I can’t believe it’s not dairy” desserts. Vedge offers a different selection of scoops daily, but some of the restaurant’s other desserts come with ice cream, too. Try the blueberry cheesecake topped with lavender poppy ice cream or the strawberry basil bread pudding topped with saffron ice cream.
V Street
129 South 19th Street, Center City
You can complete your meal at this vegan street-food spot with their soft serve flavor of the day (think: cuban coffee with guava) or order a dessert like the Ais Kacang topped with corn custard ice cream. Or, skip the meal and just go for the dessert. We don’t judge.
Vegan Tree
742 South Street, Bella Vista
Wash down your veggie sushi or vegan mushroom cheesesteak with a vegan vanilla, chocolate, mango, strawberry, almond, or coconut milkshake at this spot.
Vgë Café
845 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr
If you ever find yourself out on the Main Line and in need of a vegan treat (I often do), top off your sandwich, wrap, rice bowl, or salad meal at this café with a vegan cone of soft serve. Choices include vanilla, chocolate or swirl.
