How to Tour Urban Farms for Free Every Weekend
We hope you’ve been taking advantage of The Food Trust’s Farmers Market Tours we told you about a few weeks ago. And now, the nonprofit is taking you beyond where the food is sold to where it’s grown, and I don’t mean countryside in the middle of nowhere. Every Sunday starting this week, July 12th, you can tour an urban farm right here in Philly, free of charge.
The Food Trust’s tours will meet at Common Ground Marketplace at Broad and Mount Vernon Streets. From there, guides will lead you on a walk or bike ride (courtesy of Indego) to either Cloud 9 Rooftop Farm (remember those guys?) or a Philly Urban Creators farm. During the tour you’ll see the farm, have the opportunity to talk to the farmer, and taste some freshly picked produce (yes, please!). Afterward, you’ll head back to the Common Ground Marketplace, where you can shop, eat, and take advantage of the variety of great vendors, including the farm you just visited.
The Common Ground Marketplace is open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday at Broad and Mt. Vernon Streets in North Philly. Tours start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. every week. If you plan on attending, please register in advance by completing this form or contacting commongroundmkt@thefoodtrust.org.
