5 Fit Things to Do in Philly This Weekend
Rest assured, work-worn readers: This workweek has got to end sometime. And when it does, there are a whole mess of fun fitness activities just waiting to help you blow off some steam. Here’s what’s on our calendar this weekend.
1. Highlighter Run
When: Friday, February 27th at 7 p.m.
Where: Meet at Perelman Quadrangle, 3417 Spruce Street, University City.
A group of Penn students are raising money for an upcoming medical mission trip to Peru. So tomorrow night, they’re hosting a glow-in-the-dark fun run 5K. Runners are encouraged to wear neon colors, and organizers will provide glow sticks to pimp you out. Bring $5 cash to contribute to the fundraiser.
2. Athleta Shopping Event and Free Yoga Class
When: Saturday, February 28th from 5 to 8 p.m.
Where: Shopping at Athleta (1722 Walnut Street) and yoga at Dhyana Yoga (1611 Walnut Street, 4th floor).
Dhyana Yoga is partnering with Philly’s Athleta store for a shopping/yoga event to benefit the Transformation Yoga Project. The fun kicks off at Athleta at 5 p.m. for a two-hour shopping party, during which 10 percent of all sales will be donated to the cause. As a thank you for shopping (as if you needed to be thanked for such things), Dhyana Yoga instructors Emily Davis and Kristin Aliberto will be leading a free hourlong yoga class at 7 p.m., just down the street at Dhyana Yoga.
3. Flower Show 5K
When: Sunday, March 1st at 7:30 a.m.
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th and Arch Streets, Market East.
The Philadelphia Flower Show is hosting its first 5K fun run this year, with a course on closed city streets. While this isn’t a timed race, every runner will get a finisher’s medal just for participating, and you’ll be invited to join a post-run shindig at the on-site PHS Pop-Up Beer Garden. Runners will be entitled to a free beer or cider. It’s $30 to register, or $55 for entry to both the run and Flower Show.
4. Phish Ride at Flywheel
When: Saturday, February 28th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: 1521 Locust Street, Center City.
Flywheel Philly is getting all jam band this weekend, with a Saturday afternoon ride set to a soundtrack of Phish tunes. They’re even bringing in an inflatable cactus. (It’s a Phish thing.)
5. Cadence Bike Build
When: Sunday, March 1st from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Kurtz Construction, 1100 East Mermaid Lane, Glenside.
If you know a thing or two about building or fixing bikes, consider donating your time this weekend to a good cause. The folks at the Bicycle Coalition are looking for volunteers to help build 50 new bikes for Cadence Youth Cycling, a bicycling/mentoring program for local kids. Food and beverages will be supplied, and a $20 suggested donation is requested to benefit Cadence’s spring teams.
