6 Fit Things to Do in Philly This Weekend: Rudolph Run, Threshold Training, Jingle Bell Boot Camp and More
TGI(almost)F! Yes, we start the weekend celebration on Thursday around these parts, but that’s because we want to give you enough time to get your fitness calendar in order. This weekend, you can choose from lots of fun activities on the roster. Check out our picks below.
1. Rudolph Run
When: Saturday, December 13th at 9 a.m.
Where: Meet at Canal View Park (at Main and Gay streets) in Manayunk.
Philadelphia Runner will lead a free group run this weekend through Manayunk to celebrate its soon-to-open store on Main Street. The three-mile fun run is holiday-themed (of course) and you’re encouraged to wear costumes and ugly sweaters. If you don’t have a costume, don’t worry: The Manayunk Development Corporation will be doling out red noses and jingle bells. It’s open to all levels, and dogs and strollers are welcome.
2. Jingle Bell Boot Camp
When: Saturday, December 13th at 9 a.m.
Where: Art Museum Steps.
CoreFitness will be setting up shop at the Art Museum Steps this weekend for a festive boot camp session. The hourlong class is BYOCG—bring your own canned goods—which you’ll use for resistance training. Afterwards, the goods will be collected and donated to a local food bank. It’s $20 to participate, but you can bring a friend for free.
3. Threshold Training Ride
When: Saturday, December 13th from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m.
Where: Body Cycle Studio, 1923 Chestnut Street, Second Floor, Rittenhouse.
Seasoned triathlete Barry Lewis will lead this workshop that’s aimed at kicking your training up a notch or two. You’ll complete a challenging lactate-threshold test, explore different types of hard/easy intervals, and learn how to get the most out of your workouts based on your personal energy zones. This 90-minute session is the first of three planned for the next few months. The next one is on January 31st and the last on March 14th. You can take one or all three; the more you take, the more you’ll be able to see your improvement. These special workshops are $30 each.
4. Restorative Yoga with Massage Mini-Retreat
When: Friday, December 12th from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Where: Nava Yoga Center, 1200 Constitution Avenue, building 489, Navy Yard.
For 90 full minutes, you’ll be treated to a restorative yoga class featuring restful poses supported by blankets and props, while a masseuse works on your shoulders, achy back and stiff neck with gentle release. It’s suitable for all levels; $25.
5. Frisky for the Holidays
When: Saturday, December 13th from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Philly Dance Fitness, 1301 Locust Street, second floor, Midtown Village.
This sexy striptease-aerobics dance class is all about getting, well, frisky for the holidays. It’s set to a holiday playlist of new and old favorites, with plenty of sexy dance moves to go around. It includes a complimentary chocolate and wine tasting. It costs $25.
6. Ugly Sweater Run
When: Saturday, December 13th at 8 a.m.
Where: Please Touch Museum, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Fairmount Park.
Don your ugliest holiday sweater and run (or walk) your way through 3.1 miles of Fairmount Park. Folks will be doling out free hot chocolate along the way, while at the finish line, holiday music will be blasting, and everyone over 21 will be greeted with a free Sam Adams beer or an Angry Orchard Cider. And yes, there will be snow blowers. It’s $35 to register.
