These Are the Best Veggie Burgers in Philly, As Chosen By You
Last week, we asked you guys this very important question: Who has the best veggie burger in Philly? And boy, did you answer. You named everywhere from Strangelove’s to Devil’s Alley to Monk’s to Village Whiskey to Memphis Taproom—their veggie burger is topped off with coconut bacon, people!—to The Cedars House, and more (check out all the comments here). But there were some clear leaders in the pack, and we’ve listed them off for you below. My suggestion: Read up, and get to one of these five spots, stat.
National Mechanics
22 South 3rd Street, Old City.
Tons of you guys chimed in to say that Old City’s National Mechanics has the best veggie burger in the city. To quote a reader: “Anyone who says anything but National Mechanics has never had a National Mechanics veggie burger.” Boy, am I intrigued.
Kite & Key
1836 Callowhill Street, Logan Square.
This spot serves up a burger made with shredded cabbage, shiitakes and carrots, topped off with Swiss cheese and sprouts. And judging by your enthusiasm, it’s the bomb. As one reader put it, “The only reason I go there is for that amazing veggie burger.”
Sketch Burger
413 East Girard Avenue, Fishtown.
This vegan bean burger, described by readers as “hands down, the best veggie burger in the city,” happens to be one of my personal favorites. You can load this bad boy up with anything from avocado to truffle butter to vegan barbecue sauce and more. And, if you’re into dairy, make sure to pair it with some of their cheese fries—they are not to be missed.
The Sidecar Bar & Grille
2201 Christian Street, Graduate Hospital.
The S.O.B. Black Bean Burger at this Graduate Hospital spot, served with cheddar, salsa and chipotle mayo, got a bunch of shout outs from you guys. One reader even let us in on the secret that when you order a burger at Sidecar, you can opt for a salad, fries or a little bit of both. Yes, please.
The Abbaye
637 North 3rd Street, Northern Liberties.
As one reader noted, this Northern Liberties spot boasts a seasonal veggie burger that they switch up monthly. How cool is that? Plus, they’ve got tons of other vegan-friendly options on their menu, like vegan wings and a seitan cheesesteak—just in case you’re all veggie-burgered out. (Doubtful.)
