Name: W. Lonnie Herndon

Occupation: Pastor at Compassion Ministries

Who or what motivates you to be healthy?
Family—as a husband and father, I owe it to myself first and my wife and daughter to be healthy. In addition, as a role model for the thousands of members that call me their pastor and to the community who looks to me as a leader, I believe it is my responsibility to set the example to live a healthy life.

Describe a health or fitness related turning point in your life.
One day as I was watching television, I noticed the proliferation of the many pharmaceutical commercials; I began to think about how there is less and less information about prevention of illnesses. It led me on a quest to change and to challenge our congregation and community to make healthy living and fitness a lifestyle.

What “policy” would you institute to make Greater Philadelphia a healthier region?
I believe it starts with teaching our children at an early age the importance and benefits of healthy-eating habits and wise choices. Therefore, I would start with changing the food in our schools by removing the sugary and processed foods and providing more fresh produce and healthier choices.

What’s the most important part of your health or fitness regimen?
The most important part of my health regimen is making wise food choices. Juicing is a daily part of my routine. In addition, I have moved to selecting farm-to-table restaurants and support more local famers.

What is your number one piece of health related advice?
My advice is not to approach working out alone. There are tremendous benefits from working out with a partner. Likewise, incorporate your family in to your routine so that healthy living becomes a lifestyle not just a habit.
