Blatstein, Hotel Monaco Win Big for Preservation and Adaptive Reuse

Later this morning the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia will bestow its annual awards on 16 restoration and revitalization projects in the region. Among the big winners are some familiar names, including Bart Blatstein’s Tower Place (formerly known as the Pennsylvania State Office Building), the Hotel Monaco (which used to be the Lafayette Building) and The Arch (also known as the Robert Morris Building).

Preservation achievement award winners are fêted each May to honor Preservation Month. Projects selected for the grand jury awards have preserved, restored or adapted structures for reuse. We can all agree that any restoration involving a Wawa upgrade (see: The Arch) deserves special recognition.

Other winners who will be celebrating at the Crystal Tea Room include the team behind the Rodin museum renovation, the folks at the Naval Yard responsible for Urban Outfitters’ Angle Smithery and the St. Mark’s Church Lady Chapel restoration team. Delaware even makes the list for the Wilmington-based Sacred Heart Oratory Bell Tower restoration.
