Valentine’s Day Survival Guide
Dear Monica, I really want to get it right this year. What do you suggest I do to make my girlfriend happy on Valentine’s Day? — M. W., University City
Valentine’s Day is a big deal — especially for the single crowd. But married men pay attention! Just because you took a vow does not mean that romance is over.
When you are courting a woman, February 14th is a clear opportunity to let your sweetheart know that you are thinking of her and want to make her feel special. Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday you still have the chance to make sure all your bases are covered. Be certain that you put your plan in motion before the weekend.
I suggest the two-pronged approach, delighting her both at home and at the office. This can take the form of simple gestures like a rose at her desk or romantic cards and chocolates on her night table. Remember anything that makes her co-workers go “ooh” and “ahh” will earn you more distinguished brownie points. A note on her pillow inviting her to an intimate dinner on Monday night will surely win her heart.
Guys, you have no excuse for this — Monday night football season is over! If you would rather stay home, cook a romantic meal and light candles. Have fabulous wine or champagne paired with aphrodisiacs such as oysters as an appetizer and a decadent chocolate dessert. No need for a main course with this type of menu. All women love creativity. Take the time to write a few thoughts on her card. For the literary types, see if you can put together a poem expressing how you feel.
Valentine’s Day is not about what you spend, but rather the time that you share together. Whether you go for a velvet box with a bow or a framed photo of the two of you, her heart should melt from all of the effort and love that you put into the day!
