Rep. Frankel: It Gets Better

The state rep touts a new bill and support for LGBT youth

State Rep. Dan Frankel, a Democrat from Allegheny County, is one of the latest government officials to reach out to LGBT youth with an “It Gets Better” video. “To my knowledge, this is the first ‘It Gets Better’ video by a Pennsylvania legislator,” says Frankel, “but I hope there will be many others. This is something we should all agree on – preventing suicide and giving hope to young people.”

Frankel is the sponsor of a bill (H.B. 300) that would protect people who live or work in the state from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. It’s estimated that seven in 10 Pennsylvanians support the bill, according to a poll taken last year.

“People from all walks of life, LGBT and straight alike, have created and posted ‘It Gets Better’ videos, including President Obama and other federal elected officials, celebrities and several professional sports teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies,” Frankel says. “I am encouraged by the growing participation in this project and hope that our young people are hearing this message of hope loud and clear.”
