Santorum for President?
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum may be throwing his hat into the ring as a possible Republican candidate for president in 2012. Last night, he announced during an interview on the Fox News Channel (a network for which he has been a paid contributor) that he’s currently “testing the waters” and that Americans need “a president who believes in them.”
But in respect to the former Senator, he doesn’t really believe in all Americans at all. As an avowed religious conservative, Santorum’s made it his mission to bash the LGBT community every chance he gets. For starters, he compared same-sex relationships to incest and having sex with dogs. He also supports laws against sodomy, saying they exist to avoid undermining the basic tenets of family.
And on the subject of the ongoing Catholic abuse scandal, he raised plenty of eyebrows when he blamed society for the alleged abuse of children by priests, saying, “when the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected.” He’s also regularly refers to pedophiles as “homosexuals.”
On a practical level, Santorum also lost his Senate race to Democrat Bob Casey by a whopping 18 percentage points – the largest margin of defeat ever for an incumbent Republican Senator in our state.
But having been an outspoken critic of President Obama, he tells Fox that he’s serious about exploring a possible presidential candidacy – provided he can raise enough money for his campaign.
