Gay Weekend Roundup

What's happening Friday through Sunday

Friday, December 10

Today is Human Rights’ Day, a United Nations celebration. At the National Liberty Museum (4:30 – 7:30 p.m.) there’s a discussion about marginalized minorities with special attention paid to LGBT issues around the world. The event is sponsored by the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia.

She’s brash and ballsy. And she’s…a puppet? Madame (famed for her appearances on Solid Gold and Laugh In back in the day) makes her comeback at Bob Egan’s New Hope in It’s Madame with an E. Part musical and part comedy, the show takes audiences through a wild and witty romp on love, sex and aging. Get your dry martini ready.

Ever hear of a vagina jam? Yeah, we haven’t either. But you can one up close at the North Star Bar (9 p.m.) when the “world-famous” Dirty Diamond’s 4th Annual Vagina Jam takes the stage in Fairmount. Every girl with a ticket gets a free vibrator. And everyone enjoys an evening of burlesque, music and comedy with host Benny Michaels. While it’s not technically a “gay” event, any event that hands out free sex toys sounds pretty darn gay-friendly to us.

Gals, Naughty or Nice turn’s gentleman’s Club Risque into ladies night with L.A.’s own D.J. Lezlee (you may remember her from The Real L Word).

Guys, Stir‘s hosting the Official Grindr Party (10 p.m.) with some of the sexiest men you’ve always wanted to private message but were afraid to ask.

Saturday, December 11

If you have anyone on your gift list who would cringe at receiving a gift card to Crate and Barrel, get thee to the Annual Punk Rock Flea Market (461 N. Ninth St.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The R5 Productions event puts the mall to shame with a slamming selection of art, book, clothes, crafts and other creative/recycled/must-have stuff. You can also drink beer while shopping.

GayBINGO! hosts its holiday event at the Gershman Y (7 – 10 p.m.). Babes in Toyland – chock full of drag queens who aren’t afraid to show their Christmas balls – raises money for the AIDS Fund.

Meet the ladies of The Real L Word (8 p.m.) at Sisters Nightclub. Get your photo taken with Whitney or throw down during a red thong competition. Yes, a red thong competition.

Gay guys strip down to their underpants at Voyeur Nightclub during Skivvies (9 p.m.) to benefit an independent movie project (read more about it on G Philly).

It’s big and gay and it’s a musical. Check out The Big Gay Musical at the Trocadero (9 p.m.). The lively show takes a campy look at theatre, religion, coming out and chorus boys.

Sunday, December 12

You may not always get to church on Sunday, but you can support the gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church at Vango (7 – 11 p.m.) during Vinyl: Hope for the Holidays. Every second Sunday of the month at Vango is dedicated to all things LGBT with a portion of proceeds benefitting a local charity. Look for D.J.s Bonnie Danger, Leah and Jalen.
