When Janelle Williams and Antoine West wanted a petite personal cake — and cupcakes for guests — for their block-party wedding festival, they turned to Chivas Grannum’s Domestic Goddess Philly scratch bakery. Since 2018, the business has crafted custom buttercream cakes, pastries and confections. The buttercream is silky but not too sweet, and the cakes are often filled. Domestic Goddess Philly is open by appointment only Thursday to Sunday.

After honing her skills at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, founder Briana Green opened her own bakery right here in West Philly. The Fancy Crumb’s signature design element is the use of slender and tall tiers that lend to elegant-looking cakes, and all of the creations portray a sense of movement. From artistic drips to edible glitter, the one-of-a-kind designs dreamed up by Green dazzle and awe. She even competed on Netflix’s Sugar Rush! and won! Green also works with intimate gatherings and micro-events, and provides to-go tastings. 310 South 48th Street.

From fondant to cake lace to metallics, this place does it all — particularly when it comes to buttercream-heavy designs. Case in point: It has focused on the Korean-style buttercream flower, which is edible, delicate, translucent, and more realistic looking than typical wedding cake blooms. Co-owner Jennifer Low (she won episode three of Netflix’s binge-worthy Sugar Rush!) is offering to-go tastings, which can be followed up with a virtual design consultation. The boxes are $20 and are chock-full of cakes, fillings and icings. 6511 Germantown Avenue.

Make sure you meet with the bakers two-to-eight months prior to your Big Day to reserve your cake. What started out as a food truck in 2013 has since evolved into a full-fledged bakery and newly opened storefront that sells yummy treats, caters events and designs (yep) wedding cakes. Marcel and Brittany Maldonado, the mother-daughter founders of Milk + Sugar, have a penchant for the nontraditional, and that aesthetic is reflected in their gorgeous, modern designs. Wedding cakes not your thing? They can provide a variety of sweets such as cupcakes, brownies or cookies — delectable little nibbles for you and your guests. 1501 South 5th Street.

This petite operation from Noelle Blizzard opened in 2021 — after her confections earned attention while baking her way through the pandemic. She’s all about Swiss meringue buttercream, new flavors and fresh flowers — but you won’t find fondant or artificial food dyes here. Her pastries, cakes and other treats are available for pickup Friday to Sunday (by appointment only) or delivery; orders must be placed by Thursday of each week. She also offers catered desserts (miniatures of her popular items and custom pastry decor) for events. New June offers flexibility in how much notice is needed to book — a positive for couples planning their Big Days amid the busy wedding season ahead. 2830 Poplar Street.

Chestnut Hill

Night Kitchen

When it comes to design, Night Kitchen Bakery ensures that each cake will match your personal wedding aesthetic. And if you opt for a multi-tier treat, the team here (led by chef and owner Amy Beth Edelman) tends to bake a different cake and filling for each layer — practically ensuring something for everyone’s sweet tooth. In addition to scrumptious baking techniques, Night Kitchen is also known for its sustainable business practices; the spot is certified by the Green Restaurant Association. The shop is baking up to-go tasting boxes filled with its most popular cakes, fillings and icings; Edelman is also offering options for smaller weddings, like a two-tiered beauty and cupcakes. Place your cake order three-to-six months in advance. 7723-25 Germantown Avenue.

The Novel Baker
Dublin

Owner Alexis DeLuca and her team at this Bucks County spot love to play around with design and create outstanding, one-of-a-kind confections. A signature design element? The use of taller tiers: They stretch between five and six-and-a-half inches and bring high drama to the overall appearance. Additionally, the bakers here love to incorporate fresh florals into the composition. These elements are perfect for rustic, chic, sophisticated styles — and beyond. The Novel Baker can accommodate most time restraints for wedding cake orders, but the earlier you get in touch, the better. The Square, 123 North Main Street.

Nutmeg Cake Design

This private design studio is definitely worth the hype. The signature cake design leans on the more modern and minimalistic side, but your custom order will always be to your liking. Delicate, edible gold-leaf accents, textured marbled industrial designs or semi-naked creations are among the indulgences the team can cook up. (Have gluten-free guests? The French macarons are made with almond flour.) The catering company typically requires five-to-eight months’ notice to create your dream dessert. Nutmeg has also been working with couples on confections for micro-events (between 10 and 50 guests). 220 Krams Avenue.

Helmed by creative owner Angela Park, this sweet company excels at infusing lovely botanical elements into your beautiful custom creations, as well as including skilled detail work. For other treats to try, we highly recommend the natural rose and saffron flavored lollipops, which taste as good as they look — and also bring a fun, playful element to your soiree.

Second Daughter Baking Co.
East Passyunk

When Second Daughter Baking Co.’s Rhonda Saltzman thinks about your cake, she doesn’t see a pastry in stacked tiers. Instead, she envisions a scene crafted from cakes of varying heights, textures and colors. This deconstructed, minimal aesthetic drives the Philly-born Culinary Institute grad and her sister and business partner, Mercedes Brooks. Together, they opened an appointment-only pickup space in the Bok Building in January and began accepting wedding orders this past summer. “We appreciate a natural, simpler take,” says Saltzman. Their confections are often finished with just-plucked flowers — a perfect treat for your Big Day, we think. 1901 South 9th Street.

Sugar Realm

If you have a dream wedding cake, then Sugar Realm is here to bake that into a delicious reality. Founder Ileana Saldivia has a knack for concocting pastries that sweeten the deal with hand-rolled chocolate panels, delicate sugar flowers and petite, custom-designed creations. You can see and savor the precision and passion in each slice. Baking these masterpieces requires a bit of time, so be sure to schedule your order nine to 12 months before your Big Day.

The Sugary
East Falls

Passion is the secret ingredient at this petite pastry shop. Lesly McDevitt, founder and head baker, adds a dash of care and love into every recipe she makes, especially when it comes to your wedding. Utilizing American-style baking and the freshest ingredients, her designs are innovative, visually appealing and, most of all, delicious. McDevitt offers a to-go cupcake tasting box (couples can customize up to four different flavor combos) and is offering micro-wedding or cookie cakes that can serve 30 guests. Since The Sugary is a smaller operation, the team is limited to the number of cakes that can be made each season. Therefore, it is best to reach out as soon as possible to schedule a tasting and to start designing your one-of-a-kind treat. 3580 Indian Queen Lane.

Termini Bros. Bakery

There’s something mesmerizing about watching the experts fill cannoli at Reading Terminal Market. But Termini is so much more than zeppole, sfogliatella and other Italian pastries. The wedding cake pros are legendary and have been in the biz since 1921 (yep, 2021 is their 100th year), perfecting their craft with family tradition and skill. While Termini has five locations, cake orders should be placed and picked up at the primary location (1523 South 8th Street). Consultations can be scheduled on the website, though you can also call or email; tastings are available for pickup in-store.

Velvet Sky Bakery

Owner and head designer Jordan Harvey and the bakers here have a design aesthetic that ranges from classic to bold to filled with florals — whatever suits your flavor fancy. The team even brushes stunning watercolor paintings on the side of your cake, providing an artistic, eye-catching experience even before the first bite. Velvet Sky tries to accommodate all dietary restrictions and tends to need three to six months’ notice to start crafting your specific design. 307 Leedom Street.

Whipped Bakeshop has acquired quite a bit of fame for its treats, including a Best of Philly win for its cupcakes. Artist Zoë Lukas designs these famous cakes, and her intricate and inspiring patterns (and statement-making but classic styles, like at this butterfly themed wedding) are sure to take your taste buds to new heights. May to June and September to October are her busy seasons, so be sure to book your wedding cake at least three to six months in advance. Additionally, Lukas has been doing virtual tastings and has been selling smaller cakes tailored to micro-events. The shop is by appointment only. 636 Belgrade Street.
