On the Market at the Shore: Oceanfront Contemporary in Longport
This grand beachfront house makes up for its relative lack of decks with striking, simple-yet-elegant design that takes its cues from the Moderne more than the modern.
Longport is the toniest and the quietest of the four communities that share Absecon Island. And as might be expected, it’s where one finds the most spectacular houses on Absecon Island as well.
Like this Longport contemporary house for sale, right next to the beach.
Though it was built in 1990, you’ll find more than a little late-Depression-era style in it. As the exterior photo above should make clear, this house takes its design cues from the Moderne more than it does the modern.
And it executes Moderne design very well.
Look at its two-story-high living room, for instance. Drink in those graceful, sweeping curves on the balcony, just as you take in the sweeping ocean view from its central wall of windows.
Those smooth curves repeat themselves in the open dining room and kitchen. As in the living room, a huge window wall — this one a wraparound — lets the seashore in.
Another dead giveaway for this house’s actual architectural provenance: the glass-block window over the main staircase.
Plenty of windows make its second-floor bedrooms light and airy too. But one thing you may note about this house is that it departs from today’s Jersey Shore standard in not being decked out from top to bottom in decks.
Instead, they’re confined to two floors. One is the top floor, which contains a T-shaped master suite.
The wing facing southwest contains a sitting room with a fireplace.
The one facing northeast houses the master bathroom.
And the master bedroom faces the ocean, with full-height windows that bring in the view.
Flanking the master bedroom are two large decks where you will enjoy taking in the sunrise.
The only other deck on this house wraps around the first floor. On its northeast end sits an in-ground pool and jetted tub.
Given how lavishly this house is appointed on the inside, we figure you won’t be distressed by its relative paucity of decks. Besides, with an entire beach right outside your door, who needs decks?

OTHER STUFF: For family fun, Ocean City is right across the inlet, and for grownup entertainment, Atlantic City lies at the other end of the island. One feature of this house that none of its future neighbors will ever have: Great views from its third floor, because this house was built before a new zoning ordinance that lowers maximum building heights took effect.
