On the Market: Midcentury Modern Split-Level in Mt. Airy
The photos should make clear that this is not your run-of-the-mill 1950s split-level, however much it may look like one on the outside.
Ho-hum. Another 1950s split-level house for sale.
“Haven’t you posted enough of these?” I hear someone out there asking.
Bear with me. There are good reasons why I chose to feature this particular 1950s split-level.
All of them have to do with its design.
It might not be immediately evident from the photo above that there’s something that raises this midcentury modern house above the thousands of midcentury modern and contemporary split-level houses scattered across this region.
But walk through the front door and it should become clear in an instant.
Pass through the foyer and you are greeted by two soaring spaces. On the left, a high-ceilinged living room welcomes you with a large wraparound window that gives it a Bauhaus feel.
On the right, a similarly airy and Bauhaus-y dining room with a slightly lower ceiling beckons.
Immediately to the right of the front door you will find a study with windows facing the main entrance.
And attached to the dining room is a sleek modern kitchen that’s set up for you to put on your own cooking show for your guests. It has everything you need, including a built-in Miele espresso maker and wine fridge.
Clean minimalist lines and large windows define most of the spaces in this house. The master bedroom on the level one flight up from the living room gets even more light from the clerestory window at the apex of its vaulted ceiling…
…and skylights do the same for the stylish master bath. Dual walk-in closets round out the master suite.
Four of the five bedrooms occupy the upper level. The fifth is on the level one flight down from the living room. Next to it is a play area for the kids and a workout room along with storage space.
The main lower-level space, however, is a multipurpose media room. This room also has a cuddle nook and work desk.
This house for sale sits on a 1.09-acre lot in West Mt. Airy that offers as much room for play and relaxation outside as inside. A fieldstone terrace wraps around the side and the back of the house, with access via doors from the living room and the laundry room.
The backyard also contains a kids’ playground and a porous-paved basketball half court. Deer fencing surrounds the yard to keep critters out.
And this house needs that fencing because it sits on a secluded wooded lane wedged in between the Allens Lane Art Center and Wissahickon Park. Carpenter’s Woods is a short walk away, Cresheim Creek and its trails even closer, and the Devil’s Pool is not that much further from here. A pleasant walk takes you to Allen Lane Regional Rail station, and the heart of Mt. Airy’s business district on Germantown Avenue lies two blocks further down Allens Lane.
This house for sale stands out from its Mt. Airy neighbors because of both its style and its amenities. You will make an outstanding choice by making it your own.
