On the Market: A Tudor Revival Revival in Chestnut Hill
The outside of this gorgeous house for sale is so authentically medieval, all it needs is a thatched roof. Inside, it's a spectacular New Traditionalist.
We’ve seen a number of Tudor Revival houses that go the extra mile to recreate that Olde English atmosphere.
This spectacular house for sale in Chestnut Hill is one of them, up to a point.
On the outside, this handsome vintage 1908 manor gets the look down cold. About the only thing that could make it more authentically Tudor is a thatched roof.
There are also spaces on the inside of “Greystock Lodge” that Henry VIII would feel right at home in. Chief among them is the great room, with its high beamed vaulted ceiling and stone-and-tile fireplace. (We know from this fireplace that this house’s owners have nothing to do with Philadelphia politics: it has “Honesty is the best policy” inscribed in Latin on its stone hearth.)
Aside from the wood-paneled foyer, however, this house is really a New Traditionalist. Its owners have upgraded it with a host of up-to-date features while respecting its classic detailing.
Its formal living and dining rooms are airy yet dignified. Both have fireplaces; the one in the living room has a gas stove installed in it.
Its kitchen, on the other hand, gives off a more casual vibe, thanks in large part to its sunny breakfast nook with banquette seating. In addition to all the features it contains, it has a butler’s pantry adjacent that has glass-fronted cabinets and its own wet bar. (There’s also wine storage tucked under the grand main staircase.)
The master suite, like many of this house’s other bedrooms, features a fireplace. It also has a huge walk-in closet with access from the very modern master bathroom.
That bathroom features a steam shower, soaking tub, tile walls and floor and a toilet room with bidet and dual vanities.
On one of the rear terraces you’ll find a built-in grill and outdoor sink for cooking and dining al fresco.
And the owners preserved one unusual architectural element when they renovated this house for sale: the panel that covered the pipes on the three-story-high organ that once lived here decorates the third-floor hallway.
Finally, this house is on a secluded lane that is nonetheless a short walk from the shops and restaurants along Germantown Avenue and both Chestnut Hill Regional Rail stations.
