More Than Just Ice Cream, the sweets spot and restaurant that’s been in business for more than 40 years, is calling it quits.
Owners Dalton Castano and Rachel Capistrano-Sorg made the announcement last night on Facebook. “With heavy hearts full of love we’d like to announce that we are closing our doors this month,” read the post. “We have truly enjoyed serving the community & appreciated being welcomed into your lives. We have known many of you for 20 plus years & you have become like family to us.”
According to Castano, both he and Capistrano-Sorg made the choice to close rather than renew their lease due to a desire to spend more time with family; rising rent was also a factor in the decision.
Former owner Kay Helsel opened More Than Just Ice Cream as a dessert spot in its original location on nearby Pine Street in 1975, eventually expanding into a full-service restaurant. It moved to its current location at 1119 Locust Street in 1998; Castano and Capistrano-Sorg worked there for years before purchasing the business from then-owner Brian Daly in 2008. The restaurant is known for its comfort fare, 32 flavors of ice cream, and outsized desserts like their “mile-high” apple pie.
More Than Just Ice Cream’s last day in business will be September 27th.
