Take a Look Inside Kensington’s New Bouldering-Only Rock Climbing Gym
Tufas Boulder Lounge opened in Philly last month.
For further evidence that rock climbing is seriously trending here in Philly at the moment — you know because, like, four climbing gyms are opening in the coming months — we just caught wind that a new bouldering-only gym opened in Kensington in mid-July. Dubbed Tufas Boulder Lounge, we got the deets on their impressive new space, unique offerings, and upcoming grand opening bash.
On July 16, Tufas Boulder Lounge opened their doors at 1614 North 5th Street in Kensington. As we mentioned, Tufas is bouldering-only — meaning there’s no ropes or high-flying courses at this climbing spot. They do, however, offer a full fitness area complete with treadmills, free weights, rowing machines, and more, so you can get in some cross-training with your bouldering.
At Tufas, you’ll find walls that average at about 15 feet in height, with seamless padding surrounding the entire wall and adjustable training boards. For a little added technology, these boards coordinate with an app that allows you to select the climb you want to do and will, in turn, light up the route — or “problem” as it’s called in the bouldering world — on the wall. Cool, is just about the only way to describe this, don’t you think?
Starting in September, Tufas plans on rolling out their full schedule and programming which will include tons of fitness classes (like foundational strength classes) as well as competitive and recreational youth club teams for kids ages six to 18. Other programming will include team building courses and rentals of the gym for private or corporate parties.
On Saturday, September 15, Tufas will be hosting their grand opening party. The day will kick off at 10 a.m. with some yoga, followed by a bagel-filled breakfast, beer provided by St. Benjamin Brewing Company and live music, food, and games later in the evening.
To celebrate the opening, Tufas will be offering waived initiation fees for incoming members. Typically, when a new member signs up, there will be a one-time $50 fee — just like when you join nearly any gym — on top of your first month’s membership fee, which ranges from $60 to $70.
Here’s to the ever-growing climbing community here in Philly!
