Here’s Everything Coming to the Former Gallery Mall So Far
Though Fashion District Philadelphia is taking shape with a number of dining, style, and entertainment options, you won't have access to it until later next year.
If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the opening of Fashion District Philadelphia — the mall supplanting Market East’s beloved former Gallery mall — you’ll have to sit still for another year.
Philadelphia-based PREIT and California’s Macerich, the developers behind the redevelopment, have announced the project will now open all at once in September 2019 — a year later than when the first phase of the project was originally scheduled to open.
Due to the “large-scale, complex nature” of the “experience-rich, multidimensional” project, and due to transactions in progress with undisclosed tenants, the development team has had to push the opening date. And despite the delay, PREIT CEO Joseph Coradino’s excitement for the new mall hasn’t waned.
The project’s offerings will “create a one-of-a-kind destination that blends shopping, dining, entertainment and culture demonstrative of the day-to-night appeal of this uniquely situated property reflective of what locals and visitors crave,” he said in a statement.
“Philadelphia and the retail environment have evolved dramatically since this project’s inception and we are unveiling a cohesive offering befitting this world-class city.”
The three-level development boasts more than 800,000 square feet of space across three city blocks, with more than 80 percent of it leased or in active negotiations — up more than 10 percent since last fall.
At the time, Coradino told Philly Mag the makeover would cost $350 million. Now, the expanded scope of the project has moved the dial up to the $400-$420 million range.
The expanded scope ensures that the project will include “first-to-Philadelphia concepts offering mass appeal to the city’s diverse customer base,” Coradino said, including flagship, off-price and outlet retail; fine dining and casual quick-eats; and, movies and other family friendly activities.
Additionally, the space promises to support local artists, nonprofits and entrepreneurs with cultural and philanthropic programming to “bring more than retail and entertainment to Center City,” Coradino said.
