A beloved kosher bakery is about to return to its South Philly roots.

Lipkin’s Bakery has been a staple for breads, pastries, cakes, and more in Rhawnhurst for 43 years — but the first generation of Lipkins operated a bakery in South Philly before moving to the Northeast.

In 2016, longtime customer Steve Nawalany purchased the bakery from the Lipkin family, maintaining longstanding recipes while adding new offerings. And now, the business is expanding with a second location in Whitman, not far from its original home.

The new Lipkin’s is located at 2153 South Hancock Street, just south of Snyder Avenue. At this point, they’re just waiting on their final health department inspection; general manager Becky Seiger estimated they’ll open their doors within the next few weeks.

“We’re really proud to be back where we started,” said Seiger, referring to the original Lipkin’s location at 4th and McKean Streets in Pennsport.

Seiger said that they’re bringing back lots of old recipes for items like rye and pumpernickel loaves, onion rolls, bialys, and knishes, plus newer items like stuffed petit fours and rugelach in lots of different flavors. She also mentioned that Nawalany is hoping to expand beyond South Philly with additional Lipkin’s locations in the near future.
