Don’t Let This Sweet 12-Year-Old Pup Spend Another Day in the Shelter

Conan is just looking for somebody to love.

Everyone loves tiny, cutesy, little puppies. I mean, how could you not? But the fact is older dogs need love, attention, and nice people to take them in, too. That’s definitely the case for Conan, a very good boy who just wants to go to a very good home.

Poor Conan. The Pitt Bull mix is 12 years old, and here he finds himself in a shelter through no fault of his own. For personal reasons, his owners felt they could no longer care for him, so they surrendered him ACCT Philly on January 5. Since then, the doggo has been staying active with the help of The Monster Milers, local runners who help shelter dogs like Conan burn off extra energy. Which, by the way, we hear Conan still has plenty of — don’t let his age fool you.

Looking for a senior dog that won’t require all that housebreaking and training you’d be dealing with a young puppy? Here’s more info to help you decide if Conan is the one for you.

Name: Conan

Age: 12 years young

Breed: Pitt Bull mix

Size: Medium

Background: Conan was surrendered to the shelter because his owners felt that they could no longer care for him due to their own personal reasons — they had nothing but positive things to say about his personality.

Running style: Conan likes to do some speed work to warm up but then settles in to a nice ten to 11 minute per mile pace. You would never know that he’s 12 when you run with him, as he keeps up and will keep going as long as you do. During a recent run with a Miler, Conan elicited smiles and giggles from passerby due to his sheer joy (and hanging tongue) at being able to run. He loves to stay active and would love to run with you multiple times a week.

Why Conan is actually the greatest: Don’t let Conan’s age fool you; he’s still very young at heart. He’s at his best when he’s active (aren’t we all?) and loves to be outside. He reportedly lived with dogs, cats, and kids in his last home. Despite being in the shelter after living in a home his whole life, his fun-loving spirit and personality are still intact and he’s a joy to be around.

How to adopt: ACCT Philly is open for adoptions 7 days a week. You can visit anytime during their adoption hours (weekdays 1pm until 8pm or weekends 10am until 5pm) for a meet, or reach them at adopt@acctphilly.org or 267-385-3800. If you choose to go in person, be sure to bring the family and any resident dogs. If you would like to discuss Conan in more detail prior to your visit, feel free to reach out to his volunteer Pen Pal Jeanne that visits with him multiple times a week at ACCT Philly and knows him really well! Jeanne’s email is: jkfilano@yahoo.com.

…………….

We work with The Monster Milers to profile local running dogs waiting to be adopted. The Monster Milers are a group of runners who help shelter dogs burn off  energy and get much-needed exercise by taking them on runs around the city, and they also just launched their first-of-it’s-kind Adopt a Running Buddy foster program. If you’re not in the market for a pup right now, but would still love to help out homeless dogs, you can always become a Monster Miler volunteer or foster parent. Find out more about how to get started with those processes here.
