The End Mass Incarceration Dinner Series Is Coming to El Compadre
It's full circle for series creator and chef Kurt Evans, who was inspired by their #Right2Work dinners.
Last month, we told you about Kurt Evans, a Philly chef who’s using his End Mass Incarceration collaborative dinner series to raise funds and educate the public about efforts to end mass incarceration. Now, he’s teaming up with Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller of El Compadre for the series’ latest installment on Sunday, February 18th.
It’s fitting that Evans is partnering with El Compadre for the dinner: he’s cooked for the #Right2Work dinner series ruin by Martinez and Miller’s organization PAUWR several times, and he was inspired by their events in support of undocumented workers’ rights to use his culinary skills to draw attention to an issue that affects his own community.
On February 18th, Evans will serve a multi-course meal that includes soul food-inspired dishes with touches from his background as a caterer and corporate chef. House-made chi chi — a creative dish prepared by incarcerated people in their cells using vending machine food and commissary ingredients like ramen noodles, Cheetos, and Slim Jims — will kick off the meal.
A discussion on sentencing reform and mandatory minimums will be led by guest speaker Carl Day, a Philly pastor and community organizer. Tickets are just $35 per person, and all proceeds from the meal will be donated to nonprofit Books Through Bars.
