Music: 6 Shows to See in Philly This Week
A Soulful Christmas @ Kimmel Center | Tuesday, December 13
You can’t avoid Christmas cheer with more then 300 singers from the Philadelphia Heritage Chorale and other local choirs performing holiday and gospel songs, with mini-sermons by local church leaders mixed in.
Mac Miller @ Fillmore Philadelphia | Wednesday, December 14
Mac Miller — rapper, Pittsburgh native, Ariana Grande boyfriend — is on tour for his fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine, which Pitchfork called the “most surprising, concise, and accomplished album of his career.”
Gregorio Uribe Big Band @ World Café Live | Wednesday, December 14
Work up a sweat dancing to the funky throwback Colombian big band sound of the 16-piece Gregorio Uribe Big Band at this free show at World Café Live, part of WXPN’s Latin Roots Live concert series. You have to RSVP.
Spelling Reform @ Bourbon & Branch | Thursday, December 15
Dan Wisniewski’s nasally voice fronting Philly-based indie rock band Spelling Reform works unexpectedly well with their melodic power pop. They just released their first full-length album, No One’s Ever Changed. Dear Forbidden and FuzzQueen are also playing.
Rasputina @ Johnny Brenda’s | Friday, December 16
Led by the creative Melora Creager, Rasputina calls itself “the best historically oriented heavy cello band, for sure.” No argument there. Twenty years in, they’re out with their seventh studio album, Unknown.
The Struts @ TLA | Friday, December 16
Somehow, British rockers The Struts exist now, and not in 1985. The show is sold out so you’ll have to go re-sale.
