Josh Huff Released By Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles released Josh Huff on Thursday morning, according to an official announcement from the team.

Huff’s termination comes two days after the 25-year-old wide receiver was arrested for speeding on the Walt Whitman Bridge while in possession of marijuana, an unlicensed gun, and multiple hollow-point bullets.

The timing of this release certainly comes as a surprise. On Wednesday, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said Huff was set to play against the New York Giants this weekend. Huff participated in practice and he spoke with reporters in the locker room later that afternoon. Huff apologized for his behavior while saying he made a “terrible decision.”

With Huff gone, the Eagles are down to four wide receivers on their active roster: Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Dorial Green-Beckham, and Bryce Treggs. Treggs is likely to be active for the first time all season on Sunday. Philadelphia also has two receivers on their practice squad: Paul Turner and David Watford. Note that the Eagles have an open roster to fill.

Cutting Huff is significant for the Eagles. Not only was he one of the team’s four active receivers on game day but he provided value as the team’s primary kick returner. Huff won NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career last week following his touchdown against the Vikings. Fifth-round rookie running back Wendell Smallwood could be in line to replace Huff’s role on special teams.

Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman is set to address reporters regarding Huff’s release at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday.
