Philadelphia Police Sgt. Sylvia Young was released yesterday from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, four days after she was shot multiple times during a mass shootout in West Philadelphia last weekend.

Young, 46, was shot in the arm, shoulder, and torso by 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn, the gunman who went on a rampage last Friday night that claimed the life of 25-year-old Sarah Silah and left five people wounded, including another police officer.

Glenn first targeted Young, who was wearing a bulletproof vest and patrolling alone near 52nd and Sansom streets. Glenn shot at Young 18 times and then fled several blocks through West Philadelphia, where he was eventually shot and killed by police officers on the 100 block of South 48th Street.

Young, a 19-year veteran of the police force, was greeted by a crowd of officers who saluted her as she left the hospital yesterday. She took a moment to stand on her Highway Patrol motorcycle before being escorted home, where she’ll rest and receive therapy, according to the Inquirer.

The newspaper reports that Police Commissioner Richard Ross said he was “thankful for the outpouring of love and support that she received from her colleagues and members of the community.”

University of Pennsylvania police officer and retired Philly cop Ed Miller, who was also shot by Glenn on Friday night, was released from the hospital on Sunday.
