Music: 6 Shows To See This Week
And The Kids @ MilkBoy | Wednesday, June 8
Hannah Mohan and Rebecca Lasaponaro of indie-pop band And The Kids started making music together in the seventh grade, adding Megan Miller when they met as interns at an all-women music studio in Massachusetts. Bassist Taliana Katz takes over for Canadian citizen Miller during American shows because of a visa issue. On Facebook they list their genre as “unconscious, accessible, existential, indie, glitter, popsicle, crisis.” So, accessible popsicles sounds pretty sweet. They’re touring in support of the new Friends Share Lovers.
B.o.B @ The Foundry at the Fillmore | Friday, June 10
Atlanta rapper B.o.B brings his STFU tour to the venue-within-a-venue at the Fillmore Philadelphia. But dismiss the sounds likely popping into your head when you hear “Atlanta rapper” and “STFU” — the genre-blending B.o.B dips into hop-hop, pop and rock for his Grammy-nominated tracks. Or maybe you just know him as the guy who got into a Twitter argument with Neil deGrasse Tyson about whether the Earth is flat (spoiler: It isn’t).
Green Jello @ Kung Fu Necktie | Friday, June 10
Billed as a punk rock puppet show, this one is definitely not for everyone. The weird, funny, obnoxious punk band was formed in New York in 1981, and the members, who aren’t consistent besides founder Bill Manspeaker, definitely don’t take themselves too seriously. You’ll also see their name written as Green Jelly (still pronounced Jello) — Kraft Foods sued.
“Unlimited Devotion” @ Ardmore Music Hall | Saturday, June 11
Deadheads, you’ll want to be at Ardmore Music Hall for a show celebrating activist/“official clown of the Grateful Dead” Wavy Gravy’s 80th birthday, headlined by John Kadlecik (who played alongside Dead members in the band Further) with the Terrapin All-Stars, plus Mark Karan and Kenny Brooks, and the Butchy Band (featuring the singer for Grateful Dead tribute band Splintered Sunlight). The “Unlimited Devotion” weekend also includes a party Friday night with Wavy Gravy at Main Line Art Center, and a Saturday matinee screening of Wavy Gravy documentary “”Saint Misbehavin.” Some of the proceeds will go to the Rex Foundation charity.
Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Zone @ Union Transfer | Saturday, June 11
Prolific rapper Aesop Rock (real name Ian Bavtiz) is out with a new album, The Impossible Kid, which prompted Pitchfork to call him “rap’s greatest wordsmith.”
Flight of the Conchords @ The Mann | Sunday, June 12
The New Zealand comedy band will have you crying with laugher — or is it just raining on your face? Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie don’t tour that often, so catch them now. Comedian Arj Barker, who was on the Flight of the Conchords eponymous HBO series, will open.
