How to Shop Your Way Through Fishtown
Fishtown: It’s not just for hipsters! This neighborhood’s got world-class vintage finds, stylish plants and flowers for your place, and is home to some of the best damn coffee on this green Earth — there’s a little something for everyone there. Get to know the area that’s forever resenting being called “the Brooklyn of Philadelphia.” Here are the eight coolest places to shop in Fishtown, because we believe shopping is the ultimate way to explore any part of town.
#1. Jinxed // 1331 Frankford Avenue, 215-800-1369-609.
If you’re decorating on a budget, or simply want cool, conversational pieces for your place that you definitely won’t find at Ikea or Target, you need to shop Jinxed. Guaranteed, you’ll get lost in this cavernous store (and Best of Philly winner) full of dusty treasures and vintage wares just waiting to find a forever home. If want to be in-the-know on the store’s newest merchandise, be sure to follow them on Instagram for instant sales (and a good laugh — those captions though).
#2. Kit and Ace // 1424 Frankford Avenue, 844-548-6223.
Shop here for elevated basics for men and women like tees and tanks, joggers and leggings, and even cute jackets and dresses. Known for their “technical cashmere,” Kit and Ace has made a name for itself as the luxurious, fashion-focused counterpart to Lululemon (the founders both used to work for the athletic brand). Be sure to check out the in-store decor, made by local artists.
#3. Minnow Lane // 2029 Frankford Avenue, 215-291-1875.
This adorable baby store, filled with toys, cute onesies, and balms for expecting moms is much more than it seems at first glance. Eco-friendly, sustainable products are at the core of Minnow Lane’s values, making it easy for Fishtown parents to embrace natural parenting methods without having to truck across town. Shop local brands here that we absolutely love, like Bhudda Babe bibs and Mason Dixon moccasins.
#4. Field // 1325 Frankford Avenue.
Make your way over to this pop-up shop ASAP. It’s only here for a limited time (sigh), and it’s got the sweetest selection of house plants you’ve ever seen — the perfect way to spruce up your space for spring. Shop succulents, prickly cacti, delicate air plants and sweet blossoms here while making your Fishtown rounds, and try not to Instagram anything while you’re there, I dare you.
#5. Toile // 1333 Frankford Avenue, 267-587-7221.
Stop into this custom atelier if you want to add something to your wardrobe that you won’t find anywhere else. They carry lines from a handful of local designers, and everything is available for customization or made-to-measure. Don’t be intimidated by the showroom’s high-end couture on display; the shop has everything from funky jewelry to lingerie to batwing sweaters that will fit right into your clothing repertoire.
#6. Parlour Hair and Skin // 1339 Frankford Avenue, 215-278-7613.
This salon may have won Best of Philly for haircut, but it’s their top-notch skincare that keeps us coming back between trims. Wilde Gatherings, founded by salon co-owner Kelly, is a young skincare brand based in Ayurvedic principles, with chemical-free powder cleansers, life-changing oil cleansers, and essential oil aroma mists designed to balance the spirit and nourish the skin. Wilde Gatherings is sold at local boutiques and Free People, but it’s more legit to buy straight from the source. Insider tip: While you’re getting a facial with Kelly, ask her to mix up a custom face mist just for you — dewy skin is in, y’all.
#7. La Colombe // 1335 Frankford Avenue, 267-479-1600.
Draft lattes. Black and tans. House-distilled rum. The craziest caffeine buzz one cup of coffee could ever give. All the tools to make a wannabe at-home barista’s dream come true. Need we say more?
#8. Philadelphia Record Exchange // 1524 Frankford Avenue.
This vinyl spot is a Philly mainstay, with a curated selection of great records at reasonable prices. And if the records don’t sell you, the old-school environment will, bringing you back to the glory days. Dig through the bins of gently used vinyl; there’s hidden musical treasures that await.
