Sources: New Wawa Is Coming to 19th and Market
A new Wawa is coming to Center City.
On Monday, Wawa announced it would reveal the renderings and location of a new Center City Wawa on Thursday at the flagship store at Broad and Walnut streets (“the Robinson Luggage Wawa”). Two sources have confirmed to Philadelphia magazine that Wawa will be in a currently vacant location at 1900 Market Street. The Philadelphia Business Journal reported the same earlier this morning.
It’s the second Wawa for office workers in the Penn Center/Commerce Square central business district area; there is already a Wawa at 17th and Arch (Store No. 86) that was renovated in 2012 (and now has a mid-block crosswalk between it and the Comcast Center).
There are several currently vacant retail spots in 1900 Market; the one identified as the location for the new Wawa is the one on Market Street closer to 20th; it was formerly occupied by an American Heritage credit union (which moved to a new location at 2101 Market) and a Bruegger’s Bagels location. (There is also a vacant location on 19th Street, next to the Raindrop Cafe.)
Wawa will make a formal announcement of the new Center City location at 8 a.m. tomorrow at the Broad and Walnut location. Mayor Jim Kenney will be on hand to read a proclamation declaring this “Wawa Foundation Week” in the city. The Wawa Foundation will also announced a $500,000 lead gift in support of the No More Fire Deaths campaign.
The first Wawa opened on April 16th, 1954. As part of the celebration of its founding, Wawa will offer free coffee at all its locations to patrons tomorrow.
