The Best Thing That Happened This Week: Sam Hinkie’s 13-Page Resignation Letter
Sure, it could be coincidence: In the same week that Villanova showed the world what matters most in basketball is the incalculable mystery of teamwork, Sixers GM and president Sam Hinkie quit, laying out an instantly infamous 13-page jeremiad to the team’s owners intended to justify his endless, futile tinkering. All it did was make him appear seriously unhinged as it careened along a convoluted TED-talk-on-crack track from Abraham Lincoln to Warren Buffett to Bill Belichick to Elon Musk to Jeff Bezos’s 10,000 Year Clock. (Sample quote: “2. Second, what are the subconscious influences where the brain at a subconscious level is automatically doing these things — which by and large are useful, but which often malfunctions?”) Sorry, Sam: What we love about sports is its wide-open heart, not your crabbed, mean numbers. You should have plenty of time to try and analyze that now.
