Good morning, Philadelphia. Here’s what you need to know today:
CBS wants to sell its radio stations — and that could upend the Philadelphia radio market.
Variety reports that CBS Chairman-CEO Les Moonves confirmed on Tuesday that the company is looking to sell off its radio stations — 117 in 26 markets. Philadelphia Business Journal points out that CBS stations in Philly include WOGL 98.1-FM, KYW NewsRadio 1060-AM, country music station WXTU-FM 92.5-FM, SportsRadio WIP 94.1-FM, pop music station AMP 96.5-FM and talk station 1210-AM. And Crossing Broad ponders the future of sports talk in Philadelphia: “Does this spell the end of WIP? No, doubtful. Unlike music and general talk stations, WIP deals in a targeted niche in a big market. They may get sold, and things may change, but they won’t cease to exist anytime soon.”
John Kasich won the Ohio GOP primary on Tuesday night. Today, he visits Villanova campus.
Sure, he may only barely hang onto his slot on the Pennsylvania primary ballot, and yes, Donald Trump is still the front-runner, but Kasich is hoping Tuesday’s win might translate into momentum to become the thinking Republican’s alternative to Trump. His appearance is scheduled for noon at the Connelly Center on campus; the Pennsylvania primary is April 26.
The New Jersey Senate has passed a suicide prevention bill in honor of Madison Holleran, the former Penn student.
The Daily Pennsylvanian reports the Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act requires colleges and universities in New Jersey to have mental health staff available around the clock to assist students in crisis. That won’t cover Penn, where Holleran’s suicide in 2014 — she was a freshman on the track team — provoked a wave of introspection and reform, including the introduction of a 24/7 help line. Philly Mag’s Steve Volk wrote about the issue in May 2014.
Winter is coming … to Dilworth Park
Actually, it’s just a Game of Thones event to publicize the Season Five DVD-Blu Ray release, Geekadelphia reports. The site will be made up to look as though a dragon had crash-landed there, complete with “dug up concrete, skid marks, dragon footprints, rippling smoke, crushed benches and more, all of which fans can visit for photos.” Plus, there will be a “Dance of the Dragons” 3D projection at City Hall. Events get under way at 8 p.m.
If the Flyers keep this up, they might go to the playoffs.
It hardly seemed possible earlier this season, but Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings put the team just a point behind Detroit for the eighth and final playoff spot. “We knew it was kind of like a playoff game for us,” said Michael Raffl, who scored two goals. “We were ready from the get-go.”
