Penn to Raise Tuition 3.9 Percent

Penn will raise tuition by 3.9 percent for 2016-17 undergrads, the Daily Pennsylvanian reports. The total yearly cost of attendance — including room, board, and fees — will be $60,000.

This marks the seventh straight year tuition was raised by precisely 3.9 percent, the paper reported.

President Amy Gutmann told the paper that the uiversity’s aid to students has also increased during that time. Forty-six percent of Penn students received need-based financial aid during this school year — and the number of freshmen receiving such aid has increased by a third since 2008.

The university also changed how it dispenses aid — from loans, to grants — in 2009.

“Financial aid has gone up double the rate of tuition and fees’ increase,” Gutmann told the paper, “and that doesn’t take into account the switch from loans to grants.”
