Morning Headlines: Is Christie Quitting the Presidential Campaign?
Good morning, Philadelphia. Some roads are a bit slick from overnight snow showers, and some area schools are starting late today. Here’s what else you need to know today:
Chris Christie’s presidential dream is all but dead.
Remember when the GOP nomination seemed to be there for Chris Christie’s taking? That was 2012, of course, but Christie begged off then and waited to run until this year. It didn’t work out so well: He finished sixth in New Hampshire’s Republican primary on Tuesday. The Courier-Post reports Christie sounds like he’s ready to end his campaign. “Mary Pat and I spoke tonight, and we’ve decided we’re going to go home to New Jersey tomorrow, and we’re going to take a deep breath and see what the final results are,” Christie said Tuesday night. “That should allow us to make a decision about how we move from here. We’ll go home to New Jersey tomorrow morning. We’ll make a decision on our next step forward based on the results.’’
Kathleen Kane’s job is on the line today, as the Pennsylvania Senate votes on her possible ouster.
The key question for senators: Can Kane truly run the attorney general’s office while her law license is suspended? “If the Supreme Court would reinstate her license, we’d be done,” Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman told PennLive. “If she would take a leave of absence and have an acting attorney general, we’d be done. The issue is not her or her behavior.” If the Senate musters a two-thirds vote in favor of ouster, the issue goes to Gov. Tom Wolf. Says his spokesman: “He will await the Senate to complete its process and he will review the decision at that time.” Kane’s law license is suspended, of course, while she waits trial on criminal charges she leaked secret grand jury information.
The dreaded Zika virus has arrived in Pennsylvania.
Two cases have been confirmed in the Keystone State, another in Delaware, NewsWorks reports. The two Pennsylvania cases involve individuals who recently traveled to countries affected by the viral outbreak. Symptoms include a fever, rash, and achy joints. It is believed that the virus puts pregnant women at risk for birth defects. State health officials here, however, say they believe there is no threat to the general public.
The New Jersey man charged with killing his young son has pleaded not guilty.
The plea came during a court hearing on Monday, NBC10 reports. David Creato Jr. is charged with killing 3-year-old Brendan Creato last year. Camden County prosecutors say the father killed his child because the child had become an obstacle in his father’s relationship with a teenage girlfriend. Brendan’s body was found Oct.13 in Cooper River Park; David Creato Jr. is being held on $750,000 bail.
Bruce Springsteen is playing Philly on Friday. Mayor Kenney has some sweet tickets available for the right price.
Those 18 tickets are for the “Mayor’s Suite” at Wells Fargo Center, and KYW reports that Kenney has donated those tickets to the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to sell off as a fundraiser. “Mayor Kenney has decided it might be a great way to raise money for public education,” said the fund’s director, Donna Frisby-Greenwood. Future available tickets include concerts for Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber and Adele. The tickets are pretty pricey though: The whole suite goes for $10,000; individual tickets are $556.
