Report: Phillies Interviewing Kim Ng for GM Job

Last month, we noted the wording of Phillies president Andy MacPhail on the general manager job: The next GM was “he or she.” And today, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports the Phillies will be interviewing Kim Ng for the general manager job.

Ng was previously assistant GM of the Yankees and vice president/assistant GM of the Dodgers. A four-year softball player at the University of Chicago, Ng has also been an executive for the White Sox. Since 2011, she has been Senior Vice-President for Baseball Operations with the Major League Baseball commissioner’s office.

No woman has ever been a general manager in baseball. Ng has been up for general manager jobs before. In 2005, she interviewed for the Dodgers job. She was also up for GM jobs with the Padres, Angels and Mariners.

Ng’s parents are both of Chinese descent. Only three minorities currently serve as general managers in major league baseball, and MLB mandates teams interview minority candidates for each open position. Heyman writes the MLB commissioner’s office has hired search firm Korn Ferry to aid in their endeavor to put more minority candidates in baseball executive jobs, especially high-visibility ones.

According to Heyman, the Phillies are also interviewing former Cleveland GM Ross Atkins and previously talked with former Marlins GM Larry Beinfest.

In other news, Charlie Manuel said he’d be interested in the Washington Nationals’ open managerial job.
