Queer at FringeArts Fest: The Pop Musical Diary of a Gay Man

Each day this week, G Philly will be highlighting a different LGBTQ-themed show that is featured at this year’s FringeArts Festival. Get to know the artists who are bringing their works to the festival, and learn about what makes their productions unique.

I’m generally not a huge fan of the jukebox musical (think along the lines of Mamma Mia!), but at this year’s fringe, a gay writer and director is taking the concept and giving it a queer twist.

The Pop Musical Diary of a Gay Man, conceived and directed by Christopher McGinnis, tells the story of a young blossoming gay man, Adam, through a variety of top hit songs, ranging from Madonna to Rhianna. Although the program is clearly gay-themed, the producers emphasize that there will be plenty of enjoyable moments for any theater goer.

The show fetters Adam Hoyak, Frankie Rowles, Martha Marie Wasser, and Brianna Roth in leading roles, with an ensemble including Jeremy Haig, Zulfiya Asquino, Andrew Goren, Alexandra Rush, Grace Tarves, Alanna Smith, Lauren Messina, Ben Deane, Frank Schierloh, Kristen Tripolitis, and Jenny Fernandez.

Performances run Wednesday, September 9 through Sunday, September 13th at the Adrienne Theatre’s Skybox, and tickets are $20. There will be a special LGBT night on September 12 at 7 pm, featuring Brian Sims, complimentary wine and snacks, plus a talk-back with the cast.
