3 Pro-Weed Events in Philly This Week
Mayor Nutter may have signed a marijuana decriminalization bill in October, but Philly still has a long way to go to legalization. Part of that journey involves educating folks about the benefits of marijuana, and that’s being done in a series of events that just so happen to be lumped together here at the end of July—from educational forums to a big ol’ bash on Friday. We’ve rounded them up so you don’t miss a toke … I mean a beat.
Philly NORML Open Meeting
PhillyNORML is the Philadelphia chapter for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Their overall mission is “to educate the public about the consequences of Cannabis prohibition and the benefits of alternative policies; and to provide a catalyst for the public to express their concerns to elected officials.” On July 28th, Philly NORML will hold an open meeting where anyone is welcome to come voice their opinions on marijuana legalization and use. The meeting is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. Tuesday, July 28th, 7:30pm, 3030 Chestnut Street, free.
Get “Stoned” at the Mütter Museum
In partnership with Penn Wissahickon Hospice, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (home of the Mütter Museum) will host a debate over the legalization of medical marijuana. Dr. David Casarett, author of Stoned: A Doctor’s Case for Medical Marijuana, will offer a medical practitioner’s perspective on this controversial topic and discuss his research of marijuana use. Speakers and activists on both sides of the topic will be present to discuss theories and debate the legalization of medical marijuana. If you feel strongly about this topic and want to hear experts go head to head, don’t miss this chance to get out there and have your voice heard. Dr. Casarett’s book will also be available for purchase. Thursday, July 30th, 6:30pm, College of Physicians of Philadelphia, $10 general admission, $5 students and members.
Hemp Heals Music Festival
The Hemp Heals Foundation is hosting its fourth annual Hemp Heals Music Festival at Festival Pier. Philly-based reggae jam rocker Jay D Clark will open the concert for headliners Sublime with Rome, Rebelution, Matisyahu and Mickey Avalon. The Hemp Heals Foundation supports sustainable agriculture, sustainable health and clean natural medicine, while focusing on a holistic approach to optimum health. This outdoor festival is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy some reggae rock music and maybe light one up if the spirit moves you. Friday, July 31st, 6pm, Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, $38.
