PATCO Now Takes Credit and Debit for Paper Tickets

Until Wednesday, the rail service's ticket machines only accepted cash for paper tickets.

Passengers who prefer plastic to cash will now have an easier time riding PATCO. The Philly-South Jersey rail service now accepts credit and debit cards at its ticket machines for the purchase of one-way and round-trip paper tickets.

The change was implemented on Wednesday. Passengers who prefer the pay-as-you-go lifestyle no longer have to worry about carrying a lot of cash with them. They can buy up to nine one-way or round-trip tickets at station vending machines, but there’s a caveat: tickets expire after three days.

Until the recent change, plastic and other electronic payment could only be used to buy and add value to PATCO’s FREEDOM passes. FREEDOM cards — which operate like E-Z Passes — can be purchased for $5 with American Express, MasterCard or Visa. The cards can also be reloaded online at PATCO’s website.
