It was no surprise that Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy for president on Sunday. The unexpected part? She started her campaign with a road trip and ended up in Pennsylvania.
She was on her way to Iowa. But still.
Around the time a video was posted announcing her candidacy for president, Mrs. Clinton began a two-day drive to Iowa where she is scheduled to have her first campaign event on Tuesday.
The surprise road trip was Mrs. Clinton’s idea and would not have been made public had someone who saw her at a gas station in Pennsylvania not alerted CNN, an aide said. The aide added that Mrs. Clinton wanted to visit with people at rest stops and diners along the way.
CNN:
Chris Learn, a 19-year-old student at Penn State Altoona, told CNN that he ran into Clinton at a Pilot gas station. He said she greeted him and asked him questions. He also said she was traveling with a group of people in a small caravan.
“I knew it was her immediately,” Learn said. “I just saw her and I was like, there’s no way that’s her!”
He added: “She didn’t really say why she was there, but I was guessing it was for presidential stuff.”
The Keystone state played a major part in this odyssey as the candidate’s stop at a Lamar gas station is how the news got out.
Lamar is a town between Williamsport and State College located in (of course) Clinton County.
In a way, it makes sense that Clinton’s first unofficial stop would be in Pennsylvania, as her father was born in Scranton.
