Fill In Your Bookshelves With All of These Shiny, Pretty Things at HOME Boutique
A colleague recently moved into a new office, one that already had two huge bookcases in it, both stuffed to the brim with back issues of magazines. As we stood surveying the space (once anyone switches offices, I immediate make a visit for decorating and planning purposes, sort of like the office decorating fairy), we decided that the shelves need an overhaul.
Then my colleague, creative designer that he is, mentioned the Bookshelf Rule of Thirds (his name, not mine). Of your bookcase, devote one-third of the space to books, one-third to tchotchkes, and one-third to open space. Follow this rule, he explained, and you’ll have the ideal bookshelf — not too crammed, not too empty.
This is where HOME boutique comes in. The South Philly shop, which just moved into a shared space with Occasionette 1825 East Passyunk, is the perfect place to pluck vintage and new smalls to pepper among your books. (Tip: A trio of vintage brass candlesticks — even without candles in them — can serve as a cool sculptural element.)
