Pro-Gay Candidate Tom Wolf Wins Pennsylvania Governor’s Race

Multiple news sources are reporting that Tom Wolf has defeated Tom Corbett in the Pennsylvania governor’s race, which means that we will have a pro-LGBT governor in Harrisburg again!

Here are at least three reasons to get excited, according to Equality Pennsylvania:

1. Tom Wolf will not only sign SB/HB 300, Pennsylvania’s nondiscrimination bill, he will work with the legislature to pass the law. Tom Wolf understands that it is past time to make sure that LGBT people cannot be fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes, or turned away from businesses because of who they are. He will make it a priority to update the Human Relations Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.

2. Tom Wolf will also sign and support updating the Hate Crimes statutes to include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. In the same way that it’s been too long since we have not been protected from discrimination, it’s been too long since we have not been protected from violence based on who we are.

3. Tom Wolf understands that the transgender community experiences a disproportionate amount of discrimination, especially in the prison system. In our meetings with him, he called out discrimination in prisons and made a commitment to making sure that transgender people have access to the health care they need.
