Local pro-LGBT-business organization Independence Business Alliance (IBA) is hosting its latest social mixer with a purpose on East Passyunk Avenue, at Occasionette Goods and Gift Shop. Super-networking queens take note: The event will feature Dr. Laura Sicola, founder of Vocal Impact Productions. She'll lead a discussion on how you can use your voice "as a strategic networking tool to make strong, positive and memorable first impressions." Delaware Valley Legacy Fund's Wonder Women committee, a group that's "committed to raising awareness and funds for issues impacting LGBT women," is hosting a femme-empowring film night at Tabu. The evening comprises four short films, Respite, Danielle Erwin's Cool, Nuala Cabral's Walking Home, and Polaroid Girl(pictured), that "highlight issues of domestic violence and street harassment." Cabral and cast members from Cool will be on hand to lead a discussion about domestic violence following the films. October 21st, 6 p.m., free, Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar, 200 South 12th Street.
Toronto-based comic artist Elisha Lim and novelist Vivek Shraya are coming through Philadelphia on their "Crushes and Mountains" tour, an opportunity for the artists to excerpts from their latest works. Lim's first graphic novel, 100 Crushes, is a retrospective of five year's worth of queer zines and travel stories. Shraya's She of the Mountains follows a protagonist who is struggling to come to terms with what everyone else is telling him his sexuality is. The two have teamed up because each work "pushes against the norms of gender, sexuality and faith—even norms common within the LGBT/queer community." Should be an enlightening evening. Gay men will likely be standing in line for the opening of Century 21, the New York City-based retailer of high-high-end men's, women's and children's clothing, accessories, shoes. It's your chance to snag threads by everyone from Gucci to Marc Jacobs to Yves Saint Laurent at ridiculously discounted prices. This is the stores' first opening outside New York City, housed in a 100,000-square-foot space in the old Strawbridge building. MANNA will serve as host for this pre-Halloween OurNightOut, which finds the networking mixer in the heart of the Gayborhood at Tavern on Camac. All three floors of the newly renovated club will be open for guests to mingle, pass out cards and, if you're sticking to the Halloween theme, pass out some candy corns or two. If candy's not you're thing, Tavern is offering a special $20 open vodka bar, or you can have the option of enjoying extended happy hour prices on beer, wine and cocktails.
