Name: Dr. Ignacio Valencia
Occupation: Neurologist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, associate professor of pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine, and medical committee member and volunteer at the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania’s Camp Achieve
Who or what motivates you to be healthy?
My children and my patients. I want to be there for them as long as I can.
Describe a health or fitness related turning point in your life?
When I was diagnosed with familial high cholesterol. It changed my eating and exercise habits.
What “policy” would you institute to make Greater Philadelphia a healthier region?
I would increase the number of parks, recreational centers and health-education programs for children in the city to introduce a healthy lifestyle from early on.
What’s the most important part of your health or fitness regimen?
Eating daily servings of fruit and salad, taking my medicine and having an active lifestyle.
What is your number one piece of health-related advice?
Remember this acronym: Be WELL. It stands for Walk, Eat healthy, Laugh and Love.
