Salvation Army Collapse Site to Become Memorial Park

Organization donates the land to the city.

NBC 10 reports that the Center City site of last summer’s deadly Salvation Army collapse will be donated to the city to become a memorial park.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced Thursday that the Salvation Army had donated the land to the city tax free with the intention of building a park for the victims.

Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke said he expects council to quickly pass legislation accepting the gift of the land.

Some proposed plans included building a memorial to the victims. More than 6,200 people have signed a Change.org petitioncalling for a park at the site.

City Treasurer Nancy Winkler, whose daughter died in the collapse, led the effort to turn the site into a park.
