SOLD: Stewart Stable, Part of Cassatt Family’s Cheswold Estate

The Cheswold estate’s original owner was Pennsylvania Railroad president A.J. Cassatt, brother of impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. A.J.’s daughter Elsie and her husband J. Plunkett Stewart had the home and stable redesigned by Chapman & Fraser. Now just the stable is left, but it’s quite a stable.

The Stewart Stable faces a gated courtyard on three sides. Inside there are marble floors and beamed ceilings, along with arched carriage windows and a built-in armoire. The master suite has his & her bathrooms, as well as a dressing room. A gallery hallway leads to the other bedrooms.

Outside, the landscape is comprised of gardens, a stream, and a pond.

It took four years for this historic property to sell — and at quite a markdown. It was placed on the market in January 2010 for more than $2.5 million, and sold last month for $1.048 million.
