BREAKING: Sale Pending on Louis Kahn’s Esherick House

The buyers will be good stewards of Kahn's legacy.

Finally! The Louis Kahn home in Chestnut Hill that has been on the market for such a long time — and that inspired my personal confession of a rather disturbing nature — is pending sale, which means unless something catastrophic happens, it will have new owners soon.

Those owners, though, are keeping a low profile for the moment, preferring to remain anonymous. But they do say, via email, “We are committed to being good stewards of this beautiful reflection of the genius of Louis Kahn.”

They also note that the Gallaghers, who have owned the house for 30 years, have taken great care of it in that time (all the more remarkable considering they don’t live there).

The best news of all? The buyers plan to live in the house, “always keeping in mind its historical and architectural significance.” Kahn would be so pleased.

The sale is being handled by Craig Wakefield, who specializes in modern properties and educates the public about the history of the architecture on his website. He feels very good about finding these buyers, who he knows will be respectful of the house. “Protecting the great modern residential architecture of our region was a goal when I developed my website and began selling these homes,” he said.
