The Checkup: Cool Hands Could Make You Skinnier
• Raise your hand if you hate to exercise. Go on—I won’t judge. If you hate to work out because it’s just so dang uncomfortable, you might want to try keeping your hands cool while you do it. NPR reports on a study in which researchers looked at the exercise tendencies of obese women in their 30s and 40s. They found that the ones whose hands were cooled with a device that circulated ice water were able to work out longer than those whose palms were flushed with room-temperature water. Why does it work? Because having cool hands tricks you into thinking you’re less sweaty—and less uncomfortable—than you actually are. Voila: longer workouts, smaller waistline.
